What Is a Micro ATM?
A Micro ATM is a lightweight, handheld banking terminal operated by a Banking Correspondent (BC) agent that enables banking transactions — including AEPS cash withdrawal, debit card swipe, fund transfer, and balance enquiry — at the doorstep of rural customers who cannot easily access a bank branch or standard ATM. Micro ATMs were introduced by NPCI in 2012 as a key pillar of India's financial inclusion architecture.
What Transactions Can a Micro ATM Do?
- AEPS Cash Withdrawal (Aadhaar fingerprint authentication)
- AEPS Balance Enquiry and Mini Statement
- Debit card (EMV chip and magnetic stripe) cash withdrawal
- Fund transfer between accounts
- BHIM Aadhaar merchant payment collection
- DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) account enquiry
How to Become a Micro ATM / BC Agent
- Choose a BC aggregator or bank BC program — Fino Payments Bank, NSDL Payments Bank, IndusInd BC, Airtel Payments Bank, SBI BC, Canara Bank BC, Union Bank BC, etc.
- Submit KYC documents — Aadhaar, PAN, bank account details, shop registration proof.
- Complete BC training — 1–2 day mandatory training on transaction procedures, fraud prevention, and device handling.
- Receive the micro-ATM device — Usually a branded Android POS device from the BC provider.
- Install RD Service — Set up a STQC-certified biometric scanner (Mantra MFS 110 or Morpho MSO 1300 E3) and register RD Service.
- Open your CSP counter — Minimum shop space required; start offering transactions to customers.
Commission Structure for Micro ATM / BC Agents
| Service | Agent Commission (Typical) |
|---|---|
| AEPS Cash Withdrawal | ₹5–₹15 per transaction |
| AEPS Balance Enquiry | ₹1–₹3 per transaction |
| Fund Transfer (IMPS/NEFT) | ₹10–₹25 per transaction |
| Debit Card Swipe | ₹8–₹20 per transaction |

An active BC agent processing 30–50 AEPS transactions per day can earn ₹6,000–₹18,000 per month in commissions alone, supplemented by additional services like insurance, loan recovery, and utility bill payment.
